About The Conductor

SUAREZ CAMPOS Cesar.JPG

César Suárez Campos is an accomplished violist, conductor and passionate music educator who has worked extensively across the Americas.

Born in Cumaná, Venezuela, he began playing violin with El Sistema in 1978 and studied musical theory with his father.  He then moved to Caracas to continue his studies at the Simón Bolívar Conservatory, eventually earning the title of Viola Teaching Artist.  In 1996, César moved to the United States and earned an Artist Diploma in Viola Performance at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, a Master of Music Degree in Viola Performance at Carnegie Mellon University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Viola Performance at Michigan State University.   Dr. Suárez has performed as soloist in recitals and with orchestras in Venezuela, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US.

While in the US, César continued his activities as an educator and conductor. He was chamber music coach and assistant principal conductor with Three Rivers Youth Symphony Orchestra in Pittsburgh, and viola teacher at Saint Vincent College in the city of Latrobe. He was an assistant professor of viola at Michigan State University and a strings’ teacher in the East Lansing, Okemos and Detroit public school districts.  César has also worked with several chamber music festivals throughout the US.

In 2009, Dr. Suárez returned to Venezuela to work as an educator and conductor with several orchestras in the cities of Caracas and Maturín.  He participated in the creation of new Sistema youth orchestras in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, Peru and Saint Lucia.

Having moved to New Brunswick in 2017, he currently serves as Viola Teaching Artist and Orchestra Conductor for Sistema NB in Saint John, as well as Guest Conductor for Tutta Musica Orchestra.

About Tutta Musica Orchestra

Tutta Musica Orchestra (TMO) is New Brunswick’s newest professional symphony orchestra consisting of sixty musicians who are the Teaching Artists and staff of Sistema NB. As a professional orchestra with the versatility to break into smaller ensembles of differing instrumentation, TMO offers a unique and adaptive orchestral approach that has not existed in New Brunswick until now. TMO differs from other ensembles as our professional musicians are part of a larger mission of transformative social change through the daily instruction of classical music to over 1,200 youth across New Brunswick. From solo acts to a full symphony orchestra, we collaborate with artists across many genres to make live orchestral music more accessible, more engaging, and more relevant to more communities throughout New Brunswick.

The Connection with Sistema NB

In New Brunswick, the intertwining of performance and education is a key strategy for artists to sustain their careers. This is exemplified by Sistema NB, which stands as the largest employer of musicians in Atlantic Canada with 58 Teaching Artists on its team. These artists both perform in theprofessional Tutta Musica Orchestra and teach at various levels: they instruct in local children’s orchestras under Sistema NB, participate in regional youth orchestras in Moncton, Saint John, and Miramichi, and are involved with the provincial youth orchestra, NBYO.
